Does anyone else just not give a fuck anymore?

Mods, feel free to move this if it's in the wrong forum, but it seemed relevant.

I've been a leftist most of my life. I've never been a lifestyle anarchist. My politics are / were more of the old left variety. Communist Party in the 30s / early Wobs / SPA kind of stuff. Over the last year I've sort of checked out. There's a sort of feedback loop where I think we're all doomed and that there's not enough time and that agitating for the right kind of mass action is just impossible on that sort of time scale.

Egypt and OWS were originally very inspiring to me, but ultimately went nowhere. On the one hand, you have these kinds of mass movements that get redirected behind some bourgeois political initiative. On the other hand, you have the legions of "social justice" types with their emphasis on lifestyle, personal ethics and group therapy. Neither appeals to me very much, though the former certainly has more merits than the latter.

This is all sort of a roundabout way of saying: Has anyone else just sort of given up? Am I the only one who is more interested in making his own limited life on this earth as comfortable as possible and doesn't feel bad about it or make apologies about it?

Note that I'm not really interested in debating the point. People either get what I'm on about or they don't. If you're on some other trip, that's fine. I'm mostly just looking to discuss with other burnt out types why they became disillusioned and when and how it's changed their lives.

For my own part, I can't say that I've ever been happier or more content. There's a certain comfort that comes with giving yourself over to being completely fucked in the long run. "If AIDS don't get you then the warheads will."

I get it, man. I'm far from being "burned out" on this sort of thing (hence running this forum), but this is a place to discuss our feelings, relevance to the "cause" or just simply vent. I use to hit the skids wicked hard on all this subject matter, but as time progresses, things change. Maybe not a complete apples to oranges change, but our opinions and such fluctuate.

Having comfort and security is something we all long for...I think that's what we're striving for ultimately. A happy life with a happier and safer, smarter world....right? I mean, that's how I feel internally. Calling out the bullshit in this shallow place and finding a better outlet to our lives. Rather than give into the "man". Sure, this can lead to feeling burned out, jaded...what-have-you. It's normal...and it depends on how you practice it, I suppose.

I own a house, car, have a job (sort of) and feel very happy with my lady, my cat and the band I play in. Doesn't mean I don't care anymore or am getting "soft". I just don't want to be a part of a system or debate something that's ultimately not goin anywhere. That's why I/we try to practice having a smarter life, smarter outlook and I feel this will have it's ramifications in a positive way down the road on others. Okay....rant over

I'm a renter and self-employed. The Marxist in me says that this is the typical ennui of the petit bourgeoisie. Did that rhyme? FUCK.

I don't really feel like I'm getting soft. More like I'm getting calloused. Still, I can totally relate to a lot of what you said: I don't want to be part of the shit system and my way out of that has been working for myself. At the same time, one of the things I always hated about the left (I mostly floated around Trot circles, which should tell you a LOT if you know anything about that sort of thing) was the endless debates that go nowhere. I'm fully on board with the idea that theory, and more to the point, a sense of history, matters a fucking LOT. Still, if all you have to offer is hairsplitting intellectual wank then

Smarter life and a smarter outlook are where it's at. Right now I'm mostly trying to eat healthier and stop being the vegan who never eats veggies, working out more, getting a band started, getting better gigs for work. That sort of thing.

Maybe that's all any of us can do. Improve ourselves. I haaaate that idea, though. It seems so fucking Christian.

Nope. Short term, I just want to get through my day and rest up for tomorrow. Long term, I just want relief for the pain in my body, and to be able to do interesting work I enjoy and feel good about.

I am very tired, which makes it hard to care.

I've stopped having political conversations, for the most part. I'm not apathetic, but I'm acutely aware of how much I DON'T know, and how much spoiled know-it-all
'anarchist' kids who haven't gotten kicked in the balls yet by life don't know either.

nice one! yeah I got the IWW involved in my work dispute but my co-workers don't care if the place closes - they want it to now...ha ha ha - i want it to, but invertedly i want it to stay open & clients in my care stay safe etc.....

animal rights mean as much if not more than ever, in the uk the carnivores don't even know what they're eating - cuz they're putting any old 'meat' into their burgers - its hilarious
also the thatcher govt version 2.0 is destroying the poor & making them eat shit & fuck all is happening
except a few shocking posts on facebook. i'd be laughing expecting change if i wasn't such a pissed up, nihilistic dweeb & reALISED until you start physically kicking people in the teeth - possibly then & only then will they lie down & meekly say 'sorry' for causing them to get angry...i think this might be post-modernistic irony

what did george orwell say? oh yeah, googled/mozilla style = If you want a vision of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face - forever.

I've changed my political opinions alot over the past few years, was a pretty hardline Socialist until maybe a year or so ago, I consider myself a Libertarian now. I know that this will probably get a lot of flak, but it's what I believe in. The thing that annoys me is that when other punks push a certain type of political thought on you as the only choice, and everything else is evil. I like guns, and I'm a libertarian. No I'm not a right wing libertarian, I just believe that people have rights, and there should be a very limited government, and people should decide on what they want. I don't like religions or other majority groups pushing things at us.

Aw, don't give the kid too much guff. He's just young and trying to figure out what's what still. Jeez, a year or two ago the dude was practically a Trotskyist.

I will leave two of my favorite quotes about Atlas Shrugged in this space though:

John Rogers: "There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs."

Dorothy Parker: "This is not a novel to be tossed aside lightly. It should be thrown with great force."

sorry I didn't mean to be a dick about it. most of the libertarians I know are pretty well-meaning, just mixed up and I always have to ask them that question. their whole thing just does not compute.

Libertarianism is really popular with the kids these days. Not joking. A bunch of my undergrads are really into it. It's like when I was younger, it was really trendy to claim to be an anarchist, but now the anti-establishment types are getting into libertarianism instead. Not to give anyone a hard time, everybody has to do some exploring and the ones in my department are generally fine young men. It's just a trend I've noticed lately.
