Tell me about Sacramento and Oakland

If my abstract gets accepted I'll be speaking at a conference in Sacramento this August. There's a fest with Excruciating Terror and Noothgrush and a bunch of stuff in Oakland the weekend after. Tell me about these places, specifically food and transportation. How easy is it to get around? What is the Oakland Metro like as a venue? Any must-taste places in Sacramento?

Yo, Jeremy Stinkbot and his lovely fiancee live in Oakland. I'm sure they could show you the goods!

I am a terrible San Francisco snob, but I can help you out with Oakland info if/when you need it. The drummer of my old band puts on that fest, and thus far they've gone really well and been very fun. The Metro is just a big hall with a smaller side room, but they do have pretty good beer on tap and Greg has invited some excellent food vendors the last couple of years.

Public transportation is decent-to-good in Oakland, awful in Sacramento, but then Sacramento is a hole and you should spend as little time there as possible.

Shoot me a PM or update this thread closer to when you go and I can provide more tips.

Sacramento and Oakland aren't exactly next door to each other and depending on your comfort level and the neighborhood, Oakland can be dangerous at night if you are on your own. Might be worth renting a car. If you're feeling more nature oriented it might be worth looking into stuff like the U.C. Berkeley Botanical Gardens or Muir Woods. You don't get that kind of nature in Ohio/Pa.

Right, I'll (hopefully) be in Sacramento for the 10th-15th or somesuch and then am hoping to tack an evening or two in Oakland on after that so I can catch the fest. I'd be taking the dirty dog from Sacramento and then staying in Oakland the night(s) necessary, then going back to Sacramento to catch my return trip to Ohio. Fortunately the buses are very frequent-more so than the ones from Athens to Columbus for sure! I won't start seriously planning anything until April when I find out if I'm giving my talk or not, but wanted to put some feelers out early.

Is this fest likely to sell out in advance?

I used to live between the Fruitvale BART station and the coliseum in Oakland and the burrito trucks are the best I've ever tasted. That was quite a few years ago, though.

I currently live in a co-op in Berkeley (the largest in North America!), however, I'll most likely be living elsewhere in Berkeley or Oakland come this Summer. I'd be open to showing you around. I've been busy with school, so I haven't really got to know Oakland in depth, but its always nice to make contacts in a foreign land. There's some good views and hiking spots in Berkeley, as well.

Top because I'm going to be in Sacramento next week, Sunday night to Friday Morning. Not festing afterward. Do shows happen there? How does one find out about them? I'm going to need to do at least one thing that's not conference related, and all these all-grad student ~pirate gypsy bluegrass~ shows I keep getting emails about aren't it.

Here's the Sacramento show listing page: http://undietacos.org/

Doesn't look like there's a ton going on, but Rank/Xerox is playing the day you get in if you're interested in that neo-no-wave scene.
